Rose Hill at Mussecuna Estate is named after a Chickasaw Indian chief who once had his agricultural estate on this very same hill in the 1700's. The name Mussecuna in Chickasaw means "Singing Winds". Chief Mussecuna owned 18,000 acres this side of the Mississippi River and was widely known to be one of the first business men in the area. His land was well-known to be some of the finest corn land in the south, which made his tribe very wealthy. Mussecuna creek, full of catfish and other wildlife, runs beside the home and dumps into what we now know as Arkabutla lake.
John Robertson started building the home roughly in 1849. Ms. Ann Yates/Whitten, descendant of John Robertson, nicknamed the home Rose Hill. She was known to of had massive rose gardens on this hill during her life time. Our goal is to restore these gardens and preserve the history to it's former glory!
